Bab al-Nisa Through the Expansions

Most accounts place Bab al-Nisa among the three doors added in the expansion of Sayyiduna Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) in 17 AH, making six doors in total. On the eastern side, it stands alongside Bab Jibril; the Madinah Encyclopedia says its name recalls a remark about leaving the door for women. Accounts differ on its origin: some include Bab al-Nisa among the first mosque’s original doors, while a 2010 Saudi Press Agency report says a women’s door was added only after the expansion of Sayyiduna Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him).

The first mosque had three doors, and when the qibla turned from Jerusalem to the Kaaba, the Prophet ﷺ closed the southern door and opened one in the north wall. In 17 AH (638 CE), Sayyiduna Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) enlarged the mosque west, south and north, but not east, where the rooms of the Prophet’s ﷺ wives (may Allah be pleased with them) stood. The mosque’s doors rose to six, two each in the north, east and west walls; the building measured 140 by 120 cubits, about 4,088 square metres.

In Mamluk times, Bab al-Nisa was one of four main doors kept open, alongside Bab Jibril, Bab al-Salam and Bab al-Rahmah. The rebuilding of Abdulmejid I (may Allah have mercy on him) renewed Bab al-Nisa, one of five gates renewed in that work; the other doors were closed. The first Saudi expansion began at Bab al-Nisa on the eastern side and ran north to Bab Uthman.

The first Saudi expansion kept the earlier gates and added Bab King Abdulaziz on the east, Bab King Saud and Bab al-Siddiq on the west, and Bab Uthman and Bab Umar on the north. Bab al-Nisa is entrance 39 and has a single door.
